How to Choose a Baby Shopping Cart Cover

What to look for when purchasing a Shopping Cart Cover? As a Mom, these are the considerations that I think are most important when selecting a shopping cart cover.

• First and foremost….the baby shopping cart cover should cover the entire seating area. This is important!!! If you want the cover to protect your child then it needs to cover the entire seating area.

• The second most important thing to consider is ease of use. You need to be able to get the shopping cart cover from where ever it is in the car, quickly, and get it on the shopping cart with one hand (the other hand/arm is holding the purse/diaper bag and child). Once it is on, you can put the child in the seat, make any needed adjustments and buckle the child in.

• If you shop at any of those warehouse shopping centers with the larger/oversized shopping carts you will definitely want a shopping cart cover that will fit both the normal and larger size shopping carts. Many of the shopping cart covers can also be used to cover restaurant highchairs and park swings. Almost all of the quality shopping cart cover sold today, will cover almost any size shopping cart.

• Some of the shopping cart covers out there are very light weight and don't take up much room to store in the car or diaper bag. Others provide a nice comfy padded seating area but are the size of a bag themselves. This one is a personal preference based on your needs.

• You need to choose a style/pattern you like. Whether it is a girly girl pattern to match your princess’s personality, a striking pattern the coordinates perfectly with your diaper bag or a gender neutral pattern that will be used throughout the infant and toddler years of your entire family. Choose whatever will suit you and your family best. I personally love showing off my daughter in her purpley-flowered shopping cart cover......we get so many compliments!!!

• Options!!!! All of the name brand shopping cart cover have similar but different options that you will need to consider.

Toy Loops: These are a must have. Attach your child’s toys to them so they can't throw them over board.

Pockets: You will find pockets in different locations both inside the child compartment and on the outside. In general you probably don't need the pockets to be to big...if your going to be in there for a while and need to bring a lot of stuff in with you, you will surely have your diaper bag. The pockets on the inside are great for holding a bottle/sippy cup and snacks. Pockets on the outside can be really handy for easy access to keys, wallet and a shopping list. You will also want to note where the parent pockets are located and if it has a closure to it so that your child can not get into it......other wise, all will be lost!!!!

Pillows: For some people this is a great option. My friend would always plan on going shopping during her sons nap time so he would sleep and she could shop in peace. She always used a pillow for him. On the other hand, my daughter has never once fallen asleep in the shopping cart. So we never carry a pillow in with us, as it just takes up space. If you are going to use a pillow there should be some way to attach it to the shopping cart cover, if not this will get thrown overboard too.

• You always want your shopping cart cover to have its own safety belt. Let me just tell you...........there is nothing more frustrating then shuffling though a bunch of shopping carts looking for one that has a safety belt only to find out the buckle is broken and the search goes on. Not to mention the strap can be just a dirty as the rest of the cart.

• You need to decide if you are going to buy a brand name, professionally made shopping cart cover, or one made by one of the many at-home sewers, making shopping cart covers and selling them on the internet. When you buy a brand name, professionally made shopping cart cover, your are getting a product made of fabrics and materials that are tried and true, and will hold up to the abuse of using and washing. They will go through an inspection process and will come with a company backed guaranty of quality. Some of the at home sewers making and selling shopping cart covers do a phenomenal job and produce a top quality product. While others try to increase there profit margin by using cheap, low quality materials and sewing construction methods that are just not going to hold up. The problem is, it is impossible to tell which of these at-home sewers are producing a quality product and which ones are not. If you are going to buy from an individual that simply sews in their home – you will probably find some great fabric patterns to choose from. Try to make sure you buy from someone that has been personally referred to you, and make sure they are using a quality fabric. Cheap, thin fabrics will rip at the stitching after just a few months of use and washing.
